Paddles Up! The 2026 Great Canoe Races Bring Naples Together at Baker Park

There are some events in Naples, Florida that simply feel like summer, sunshine, and community all rolled into one — and the 2026 Great Canoe Races of Naples proved once again why this longtime tradition remains one of Southwest Florida’s most beloved local celebrations.

Held at beautiful Baker Park on May 16, 2026, the 46th annual Great Canoe Races transformed the Gordon River into a lively playground filled with kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, cheering spectators, music, vendors, and nonstop laughter. From competitive paddlers slicing through the water to families waving from the dock and above from the bridge the entire day carried the relaxed but energetic vibe that defines Naples living. The event, hosted by the Young Professionals of Naples and community partners, featured professional and amateur races in canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, along with live entertainment, food vendors, a beer garden, and family-friendly activities throughout Baker Park. The 2026 theme, “Legends of the Gulf,” celebrated the adventurous spirit and coastal culture that has shaped Naples for generations. (Great Canoe Races Of Naples)

The photos from this year’s race perfectly captured the spirit of the day. One image showed determined racers digging their paddles deep into the Gordon River as water splashed high into the Florida air. Another highlighted two smiling canoe racers enjoying the competition as much as the race itself — a reminder that the Great Canoe Races have always been as much about fun and camaraderie as winning.

Other scenes reflected the broader community atmosphere surrounding the event. Families lined the docks cheering for racers, paddleboarders cruised through the scenic river course beneath blue skies, and spectators gathered around the main stage while live music echoed through Baker Park. Palm trees swayed in the background as locals and visitors soaked in another classic Naples weekend.

While Baker Park now serves as the modern home of the Great Canoe Races, longtime Naples residents still fondly remember the event’s earlier years at Crayton Cove and The Dock restaurant area. The original “Great Dock Canoe Race” became a Naples institution beginning in the late 1970s, when local entrepreneurs created the race as a playful end-of-season celebration. Over time, the races evolved into one of Naples’ signature waterfront traditions, drawing competitors, spectators, and local businesses together each year. (Great Canoe Races Of Naples)

For decades, Crayton Cove provided the perfect Old Naples backdrop with its fishing village atmosphere, waterfront restaurants, and colorful local character. Many longtime residents still remember standing shoulder-to-shoulder along the docks watching wildly decorated canoes and spirited teams paddle furiously through Naples Bay.

After a hiatus in recent years, the event found renewed life at Baker Park, where the wider waterways and park setting have helped introduce the races to a new generation while still preserving the original community-focused spirit that made the Great Dock Canoe Race famous in the first place. What continues to make the Great Canoe Races special is how uniquely “Naples” the event feels. It combines outdoor recreation, local business support, conservation awareness, friendly competition, and the laid-back waterfront lifestyle that defines Southwest Florida. Whether you were racing in a kayak, paddling a stand-up board, volunteering at a booth, or simply relaxing under the palms with friends, there was something welcoming about the entire experience.

In a city known for beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and spectacular sunsets, events like the Great Canoe Races remind people that Naples is also deeply rooted in local traditions and community pride. As the final paddlers crossed the finish line and awards were handed out under the warm Florida sun, one thing became clear — the Great Canoe Races are more than just a sporting event. They are a celebration of Naples, Florida itself.

Photographer Glenn Christopher of Divine Naples Media also seemed to be everywhere throughout the 2026 Great Canoe Races capturing the energy and personality of the event from every possible angle. Long known throughout Naples for documenting community events and local history, Glenn could be seen lying flat on his stomach along the dock to photograph paddlers at water level, standing thigh-deep beneath the bridge to capture racers as they powered through the course, and even riding his bike across Baker Park to photograph exhausted but smiling competitors as they climbed from the water after their races. It was a familiar sight for longtime race fans, as Glenn has photographed the Great Canoe Races for many years dating back to the event’s legendary days at Crayton Cove, helping preserve years of Naples waterfront history through his lens.

For locals, it’s a tradition. For visitors, it’s an unforgettable glimpse into the heart of Southwest Florida waterfront culture. And judging by the crowds and excitement at Baker Park this year, the future of the Great Canoe Races of Naples looks brighter than ever.
